With several years of foundation design and contracting experience, we’ll bring our wealth of knowledge and insight to provide the most complete design solutions for your next development.

Deep Foundations Specialists – A Division of Anglo-Celtic Engineering – have been lucky to have been actively involved with the development of several ground-breaking projects and we are proud of our accomplishments. A few of our completed projects can be seen below.

PROJECT – Millipore Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade Cork, Ireland

CLIENT – Quinn Piling Limited Downpatrick Northern Ireland

It was proposed to upgrade the Millipore Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Cork, Ireland. The upgrade scheme involved demolition works, access road construction, construction of a new reinforced concrete bund, steel platforms, installation of a new glass-lined tank & associated piping and mechanical installations.

Quinn Piling were awarded the sub-contract for the piling works, as part of the upgrade scheme. The piling sub-contract comprised of both design and construction responsibilities for the sub-structure. To execute the design aspect of the piling sub-contract, Quinn Piling engaged the services of Deep Foundations Specialists Limited (DFS) from tender stage. DFS were required to conceptualise, develop and design a very economical and competitive foundation solution for the scheme.

Design tasks executed by DFS include:

1. Development of a suitable pile layout for the proposed scheme.

2. Resolution and estimation of service loads on proposed piles.

3. Geotechnical and structural designs for piles to support axial compression, tension, horizontal shear, torsion and overturning moments.

4. Analysis of pile group behaviour.

5. Estimation of pile settlements and lateral deflections under working loads.

Analysis and design involved manual calculations, geotechnical finite element analysis with ‘PLAXIS’ 3D FE modelling programme for soil-structure interaction, geotechnical finite difference modelling with ‘Oasys Alp’ and structural modelling with ‘Oasys AdSec’.

By adopting reasonably unconservative design approaches, coupled with our engineers’ in-depth knowledge of local ground conditions, DFS were able to offer an economical solution, which gave the client a competitive edge to secure the piling sub-contract. In addition to consultancy work at tender stage, DFS were also responsible for the detailed design at construction stage. Results of load tests on selected working piles were satisfactory and in conformance with supervising engineers’ specifications.

PROJECT – Development at Mansfield Road Nottingham U.K.

CLIENT – SAFE Consulting Engineers U.K.

A reinforced concrete multi-storey commercial development on the outskirt of the city of Nottingham, adjacent to an existing 1m diameter underground water main. It was proposed to support the structure on precast concrete driven piles. As the project supervising engineers (SAFE Consulting Engineers) and local authorities were concerned about the potential influence of piling-induced vibrations on the water main, Deep Foundations Specialists Limited (DFS) were engaged to provide expert advice.

DFS prepared and submitted a technical report detailing estimated vibration levels at the location of the adjacent water main, that could arise from pile driving operations on the site. Report presents estimates of vibration levels at pipe location, considering selected piling points, while also comparing with allowable vibration levels specified in current codes and standards. Recommendations were made on allowable safe distance between any given piling point and lcation of the water main, pre-construction trial tests and vibration monitoring scheme during construction.

PROJECT – Large Scale Residential/Commercial Development at St Johns Wood Road, London

CLIENT – Hill Piling Limited.

A large-scale mixed-use development in North West London founded on 750mm diameter Rotary-bored piles and comprising of triple-level basement with a maximum retained height of 11 meters. Basement construction required 750mm diameter secant pile walls for soil retention and groundwater cut-off.

At tender stage, Deep Foundations Specialists Limited (DFS) carried out designs for the foundation piles and secant pile walls for Hill Piling Limited. Multiple economical options were provided to Hill Pilling for the secant pile wall solution and this ensured a successful bid by Hill Piling.

At contract stage, DFS carried out detailed construction designs for the bearing piles and secant pile walls, while recommendations were also made on suitable site dewatering scheme. In addition, finite element analysis was carried out to predict wall deflections and corresponding settlements beneath neighbouring structures and a major road located at close proximity to the excavation area.

PROJECT – APEX Centre Development Dublin

CLIENT – RAP Construction Limited Ireland.

A mixed development in west Dublin comprising of commercial units and residential apartments. Deep Foundations Specialists Limited (DFS) designed foundation piles, contiguous pile walls, ground anchors and soil nails for one of the bidding main contractors (RAP Construction Limited Ireland) at tender stage, as part of the design and build tendering process.

RAP Construction Limited was successful with its tender and they subsequently re-engaged DFS to carry out detailed designs for the geotechnical elements of the contract. DFS’ designs were ultimately adopted by the piling contractor chosen by RAP Construction Limited.
